A lot of people in the poll said it was the scoring system which I disagree with, and the fact that a lot of people blame the scoring system is part of the problem. Take the couture v vera fight. Control is boring to watch and people don't like it, but it is more representative of skill, as opposed to explosive fighters who "get lucky" with the occasional single high damage strikes they do throughout the fight. Like it or not, one person can do more damage to the other in a fight and still lose because of these rules. That, I do not have a problem with and the fans that usually do are the "bloodthirsty" idiots who don't get the concept of competition and sport.
Another popular point was the blood sport stigma which I believe is entirely valid as there are still a LOT of people who believe that even with the rules they've placed, it's still just human cockfighting, and a lot of the demographic doesn't help that view at all, as pointed out above.
And speaking of rules, that seems to be another issue in that UFC seems to have arbitrarily set standards which would go on to being a basic concept across organizations. And even with the fact that these organized rules seem to have been created out of the blue, they're not entirely the same with everyone. Hell, the rules of MMA even change depending on the venue the event will take place in, Dana had admitted that himself.
One problem I forsee that I don't believe was on the poll was the lack of official ranking system. I feel that some of these fights are chosen practically at random, which I admit is partially the fault of other needed systems, for instance the mandatory waiting period after any fight. However, because of this, they can just kind of pick whoever they wish for whatever fight they want, which leads way to such incidents we've seen a lot recently, where certain fighters will suddenly fall down the ladder simply because their future opponent became injured, or a lesser fighter gets thrown way up the ranking to fill in spots.
If you've seent he movie "Great White Hype", there was a scene where they had to justify making a former amateur fighter who hasn't had a professional fight being one of the top contenders. Now as much as we all see the inner corruption of boxing, which was perfectly made apparent in that film, that's something that boxing has done right. Sure, in the film, they were able to convince everyone that the guy deserved a title shot, which was corrupt, but in MMA, they can just grab any random kid by the arm, shout "Number 1 contender" and everyone else just better bend over and take it, and that'll arguably lead way to a much more corrupt system. And the last thing ANY mma fan wants to see is the concept degenerate into professional boxing.
For all of you who don't have access to google or know how to look things up (I'm looking at you Hazzius) this is how the results look so far.
