That "also effective in mma" part pushes you to muay Thai and BJJ pretty much. Between the two, for street AND "ring" fighting, I'd probably have to give the edge to muay Thai. You really don't want to be on the ground in a serious street fight. If you are, the shit has already hit the fan!

Sounds like muay Thai suits you, then...;-) But I will tell you that you would not want to be a muay Thai fighter going against a Silat guy who wants to maim or kill you in a street fight!...lol Also, you'd rather be a Silat guy if you get jumped by multiple, simultaneous opponents.

No hating on muay Thai, though. I love it! But, we have to face the facts: muay Thai is limited by sporting rules and has adopted tactics and strategies in order to best serve that end--success in a sport fight. Silat, on the other hand, is about, "Whatever I can imagine as the worst situation I could possibly encounter in real life and, given that, what will best increase the odds that I survive intact?"

P.S. - In Malaysia, the "muay Thai" fighters (yeah, they have them--go up to Thailand for matches and everything) give all due respect to the practical and martial prowess of Silat. Many even train both, realizing that muay Thai is for sport and Silat is for serious self-defense or fighting.

Is it just me, or would it be assumed that MIXED martial arts wouldn't be included as an option for one martial art?

Probably kali or krav maga, I'm a bit biased towards kali but I haven't had anything in Krav maga. There's some good descriptions in the thread Luther just posted.
