Now for a bit of instruction, did you know that the UFC is the most recognized MMA sporting event in the US? Most people training McDojo variety "MMA" in the US are thinking UFC. Oh, and, btw, the UFC...that's the one that uses the octagon.

Nancy, this may be hard for you to comprehend, but you've rather got the cart in front of the horse. See, "MMA" means "mixed martial arts". Etymologically and historically MMA came about from having established martial arts compete under certain rules (in most cases) in order to determine which style would prevail. Over time, the trend of some combination of boxing, muay Thai, wrestling, BJJ, and closely related styles seemed to dominate bouts bound by the rules of a typical "MMA fight". So then people started cross-training between two or more martial arts for the purpose of fighting in MMA bouts.

It gets interesting, Nancy, and more to the point of my first post, when you consider the new usage of "train MMA" that doesn't even bother saying what martial arts are informing that training. "I'm training MMA" could mean Judo and Tae Kwon Do. It could mean wrestling and boxing. It could mean spear fighting and t'ai chi. It could mean all sorts of things!!! Unfortunately, I suspect it all too often means some jack-of-all-trades approach to a specific venue for MMA fighting, like the UFC, as is often the case in the US. When that is true, one is not truly training "mixed martial arts", as in cross-training between two or more martial arts. He is actually training a hybrid style, and "MMA" is a bit of a misnomer.
