Oh, and about the shakes, get the powder, because it is more cost effective. Use a blender, as it doesn't mix very well much of the time. Consider mixing it in milk, as it tastes better and adds nutrients. Just check the nutritional ratios of the overall drink.
Beyond that, all powders are NOT the same. There are numerous amino acids, etc., that comprise a protein powder. The greater the variety the better. L-Glutamine is a nice one to have, as it is said to help with soreness. The cheaper brands will often have a rather limited variety of amino acids and way too much fat and/or sugar. You want a fairly lean protein shake.
That being said, I would try to get much of my protein from lean meats: chicken, fish, turkey, etc. However, be careful about eating certain fish too often. There is a serious problem with mercury contamination with many farmed fish and the like. Do your homework!
