Default What is the difference between these strikes?

Jab
Straight
Uppercut
Cross
Overhand
Hay Maker
Hook
( punches ) If I missed any, please include those also. I keep hearing them, but they look the same ( except for the uppercut)

Also, I want to use a good stance, but I don't know of any, so can you guys please give me a link or recommend me any? I don't have super fast reflexes so I want to protect my neck up and groin at all times. I am left handed, but my right hand is more dominant in punching, but in arm wrestling, my left is more dominant. My right leg is my power leg. I like to use knees a lot and I don't punch too much.

Overhand is a certain kind of kick
You can only do hay makers with weapon training.

Default Re: What is the difference between these strikes?

At Lv. 12.

Real answer:
Jab: A straight punch from the lead hand
Cross/Straight: A straight punch from the rear hand
Uppercut: A rising punch with power in the legs.
Haymaker: Crap
Overhand: What it sounds like. A looping punch.
Hooks: Again, what they sound like, a punch that hooks toward the body.

As for the stance, Juno has a nice video showing you.

I'm no expert on punching terminology, but I'll tell you what I think is more or less accurate:

I would take this to be the same as a cross (see "Cross" below).

I would suspect this also refers to a cross. However, it may refer to punching over the top of the opponent's punch while simultaneously evading their punch. Or maybe it refers to what I call a hammer fist, which is a Norman Bates/Psycho hand motion without the knife.

This generally denotes a wide punch that is usually "wound up". It is sort of like you're swinging a tennis racket only making the motion as a big punch to the face. It is almost always best not to utilize this "technique".

It is almost like turning an uppercut so it comes in from the side and strikes the side of the opponent's face.

I think the important ones to know are: jab, cross, uppercut, and hook. Again, I'm not expert on punching terminology, but almost everything seems to be some variation of those four. Even a hay-maker can be seen as a wildly exaggerated cross.

I would advise a standard stance: right foot/hand back a bit. Since you apparently don't have any training, I would advise a wider, lower stance. Your right foot should be roughly equal parts behind you and to the right of your left foot. Your knees should be bent with a 50/50 weight distribution. Your fists should be at about eyebrow level, probably 6-8 inches from your face. In practice, your stance should be a bit dynamic with weight shifting a bit between the legs at all times. Your rear (right) foot should be up on the ball of the foot with some spring in the calf. Your hips should be slightly turned clockwise from facing directly forward. Your elbows should be comfortable, but keep them in a bit--not like a "V", and not quite parallel.

Cromwell

P.S. - If I'm wrong about the punches, I hope the others here will readily correct me for the sake of both of our educations.

P.P.S. - Check the stickied threads with videos, etc. They will likely help more than a text explanation.

Default Re: What is the difference between these strikes?

You only know those punches as a noob. When your power level passes 9000, you learn more punches, like I have.

Backfist - Also known as a Spinning Backfist, or, as I use it, a "Pimp Slap"
Hammerfist - Using your hand, like a hammer, to hit someone.
Shovel Hook - A mix of an uppercut and a hook. It's a punch thrown around 45 degrees. Good to hit livers with.

and not to forget

The "Falcon" aka "Superman" Punch - Must yell "Faaaallllcon PUNCH!" Then jump at your opponent and give them a punch to the face.

I couldn't take this thread seriously from the beginning, no offense, because of the phrase, "they look the same"

I personally like the thunderclap! Fucking hulk in this bitch
