Default Fighting bigger (fatter) and taller opponents

I should just say that despite all the tips I can give, it helps if you know how to fight, if your going to get in a lot of fights then head to a gym of some kind or try not to fight at all!

So first if all, fighting people bigger than you. By this I mean people who are quite fat, not nessecarly taller than you.

If someone is fat they probably are going to weigh more than you, so this means that:

- If neither of you are trained then they will probably have the harder punches. (more weight = more power)

- When the fight gets into some grabbing or goes to the ground their added weight is going to make it a lot harder for you shove them around and if they get on top of you then you're in some trouble. But this doesn't mean you should succomb to defeat. Keep moving, keep striking, look for sweeps and upkicks. Use any ground experience that you have and try to get the dominent position or to get back up again. Just be careful!

- Their weight also means that they are likely to be slower; in moving around, in throwing techniques and getting out of the way of things. You need to use this to your advantage!

A few other things on fat people:

- Mostly they will get tired quicker than thinner people, this isn't always going to happen but it is pretty common.

- The fat acts as a bit of a cushion, protecting the body. It means they are less likely to get hurt by body shots, however it doesn't protect other areas anymore than normal.

Now for some tips on fighting them:
(NB this is where it helps if you have some training)

- Remembering the things I mentioned before the first thing is to keep your distance.
If they are going to be throwing hard punches then you don't want to be caught by it. So keep them at a distance, move around. Don't get too carried away, you still need to win the fight and all.
This also means that you won't get taken down by their superior weight.

- Be fast. When you strike at them you you have to try do it quickly and when moving away from them do it quickly. Let them chase you.

- Tire them out. If you're moving, making them miss, then they will get tired.
The tireder they get, the worse they become. So if you have time go for it.

- Dont forget to use dirty tactics if you get in trouble, kick them in the balls, poke them in the eyes, whatever... It's about winning not about getting points for being a gentleman!

- Always remember to play to your strengths and avoid theirs. So like I've said above; dont do anything that lets them use their weight and at the same time do things that you can do well.

- Throw your punches in combos. Using mostly straight punches (your longest ranged punches), step in, throw a combo, then step out of range (with your hands up and guarding).

- If you can kick use that to stay out at range. But only if you are trained to kick. Otherwise it is too risky. Even if you are trained don't go above the waist: there is too much risk of being taken down.

So there's some pretty general tips on fighting fatter people.

Now people who are taller than you:

- Tall people dont have as many things to mention as fat people but the main thing to be careful of is their reach.
Since they are tall they will have longer legs and arms, and so will be able to keep you away. Hitting you while you can't hit back.

- Real tall people, who are almost freakishly tall do have some problems with speed, and they can't quite do anything quickly.
BUT this is only a possibility, they might not be tall, you might just be small.
So dont assume that if they are tall then they are slow.

- Of course don't forget that tall people could also weigh more than you aswell. But I just told you all about fighting people like that!

So tips on fighting them:
( NB Fighting tall people is a bit more specific than fighting fat people, as there are less things to consider.)

-Again the he main thing is their reach advantage: they may not be a trained fighter and not know what to do with this, but even then it will still work in thier favour.
- So, you need to get in close.
- Wait until they throw a punch, try avoid it by slipping FORWARD (not backward), then push in.
- When you get in closer throw tight, hooking punches, or overhand punches. Refer to:
- Body Clinch them tightly aound their lower waist, and work leg trips or slams.
- Try to get them down as quickly as possible, so they can't get you away.
- Dont be afraid, if you keep backing up, they're gonna get you.
- Again if you need to, fight dirty.

So thats pretty much it, I haven't encluded any detailed techniques, but those are the sort of things that are best learnt under some training.
So please feel free to add your own thoughts!

And now (thanks to Shane) in video form!

u might as well want to add use Hooks and not so many straight punches against taller people, it just lands better whereas with straight punches u just get countered

the skill is an important factor i remember this FAT guy messing with me he was probably 92-4 kg and i was in that time 69kg but i was so mad that i just blocked the punches, cut the distance, got the underhooks, put my leg on his side and SLAMMED that motherfucker... i would never do that with the heavyweights at my gym, its suicidal

Perhaps a tall person should comment on your "how to fight a tall person"?
Well, I have to say, alot of people tend to think that tall people (I'm 6.2") are rather slow and don't have a very good balance. Yeah, so I've experienced it alot of times, when people just try to push me (because I'm tall), and actually expect me to fall over.
Usually when people try to push me in the chest, it ends up with a knockout (right cross). THANKS LONG REACH <3

In terms of taller fighters.
Striking the body can be really effective and it is often neglected by many boxers etc...
If the head isnt a viable target then maybe the solar plexud and kidneys? This might then bring the head down.
Knees might be in range for sidekicks, feet for stomps.
You will be at an instant disadvantage so us shorter guys have to be more quicker, skillfull, more tenacious and aggressive than our opponent.
I think any clinch situation is bad unless your opponent has no clue at all. So I guess the best idea if you get caught in one is to raise your opponents elbow and get your forearm in their face?

Im in the tall range i guess. Im 6'0'', and i can tell you that, at least with me, the one place opponents can sneak in is the lower body.

Kicks, knees and punches to the lower core can be devistating, especially the kidneys. If you strike about 3-4'' to either side of the abdominals, you will probably hit a weak spot. The taller you are, the less dense that muscle area will probably be, as the muscles are longer and not as contracted.

Hope this helps. Like i said, im not Super tall, but i think 6 foots ok
