| Backing up when taking punishment
Hey guys, its me, Don again, asking for advice...
I noticed today again that everytime in fight/sparring someone, if opponent attacks I back up everytime. Fast, 1 to 3 meters. If I just circle away he continues attack or if I just stay there and protect myself, he just punches me to everyplace. If I try to counter I get punched to face very quickly.
I dont know exactly why am I doing it. I dont know if im scared of punches or not. I am concerned about potential brain damages, but other than that, I have nothing to worry about. Second sparring partner rocked me bad, my knees buckled and I almost fell to my knees, doing so called "chicken dance". But immediately when I recovered I was pressuring him. Also got hit back of the ear (which still hurts like hell) and got dazed but I fastly countered. So im not kinda afraid of pain, maybe just brain damage.
But how I can prevent doing this? It annoys me a lot.

At Silver Wolf, they taught me to not cover up when retreating because thats how you get clinched and eat knees.
What works better is jabbing out. Fire a few jabs to slow them down as they chase you.

he shouldn't have hit you in the ear like that it's illegal in most forms of MMA and yeah like SOUL said fire some jabs at him. Also just start to circle away from him quickly and try to get an angle from the side. |

Getting hit just behind the ear is legal in All forms of MMA, Boxing, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai. In fact it's one of the best places to strike as it affects sense of balance and you can easily knock someone down that way.
Backing up is fine if you do it properly and in a controlled and balanced manner, but don't just back up in a straight line for the entire fight, you can end up tripping, losing balance, and you lose offensive capabilities.
Just circle, jab, don't obstruct your own vision by turtling up. Be aware and move in a deliberate manner. If you do take a step back, side step after and get out of the line of fire.

Oh ok then haha thanks Jolly, I figured it wasn't because it's illegal to strike to the back of the head in all forms and I know there are sensitive nerve endings there so I figured it wasn't legal haha. :/

When I circle I jab or looping left hook if they are in range, but not sloppy otherwise your gonna get KTFO. Make them fast, snappy.

Yeah, jabbing sounds like the best thing to do in that situation because your not only gaining separation, but it also sets you up for a right hand if he chases. OR if your reaaaly confident, you could step in get inside and try a little dirty boxing. I've never personally tried it myself I've always tried to keep at arms length, but try it. Might not be as effective... and hell it might even get you KTFO.. but hey where would the world be if it didn't have dudes like us testing out their little theories?
