Knowledge unapplied is useless.

If you train it properly, it works.

If you know any martial art and how to execute it properly, it will defend yourself against the average punk. Don't go out starting stuff though. Work hard and train hard

I would hope so! But it's kind of a God only helps those who can help themselves sort of thing, if you don't practice it, you won't be able to use it when you need to. You have to practice until you;re sure that your technique is flawless, so that if you get into an actual fight, it's all instinctive and the only thing you have to think about, is what part of your opponent's face or body you're going to break next!

Can boxing help you learn how to defend yourself at school? Most likely.
Can you learn how to do it online? Most likely not, but then again, I'm very skeptical about those DIY Martial art books and posts.

If they're showing you the basics, they might probably help, but the best way to utilize them is to practice what you have been taught, and to keep it a secret.
Remember this. The best type of weapon is the weapon nobody see's coming.

personally, I'm much more a fan of

''oh you saw my throw coming? if you stiff up I'm going for another one that you already saw coming too but that you can't avoid if you manage to avoid the first one (I'm much superior to you suck it) ''

on a more serious note, yes you can improve on your own, yes, internet helps but it doesn't mean that it's the fastest way to improve, it's just much better than doing nothing

The only thing that helps you defend yourself is your will to live.

This is why black belts have a bad reputation.

Agreed, but just having the will alone's not enough, ya gotta have action, the right tools, and (good)training and experience.

All homeless dudes and gang bangers have is a will to live. They beat up martial artists all the time.
