How about a legal folding knife? A roll of pennies works if you know how to punch.
If you don't mind the dark side, brass knuckles are damn near perfect pocket weapons.
After in Texas, I noticed key chain box cutters and razors were popular, and here in Hawaii damn near everyone I know carries a folding knife (not to mention knife laws in Hawaii are particularly lax).

I was about to suggest a torch/flashlight myself, I've seen how good a defensive and offensive tool it can be!
Something which isn't in your pocket, but is very often with us is a BELT. The belt:
1) Can be used offensively to deflect knife blows, club and rod attacks, etc by holding one end in each hand.
2) Can be used offensively and is especially effective when striking the faces (particularly the eyes) and groin. If one becomes acquainted with using the belt, they can switch to striking with the buckle end, but this is very hard to control. This is done by a 'flicking or swinging action with one hand. You can use one hand to deflect your opponents hand and strike with the belt, or divert their attention/confuse them.
3) Can be used as a means of keeping your adversary at bay or acting as a stalling or diversionary measure. Given its long reach, many people aren't willing to come within striking distance, you can use this time to call for help, survey your surroundings for a way to escape, etc.
The belt is so UNEXPECTED a weapon it often gives you an element of SURPRISE. This buys your precious moments in instances such as sudden assaults on the streets at night. If you can step back far enough for you to slip it out, it can come in really handy (provided your pants don't fall down!). The way in which the belt can be used makes it seem 'unpredictable' to the everyday aggressor as well, making it a 'weapon' to consider whenever you are in a tight spot.
Cheers!

Best weapon for a street fight? Probably a bic or some rings or something similar. Best weapon for self defense? Mace.

i would suggest roll of pennies. just keep in mind that if you get busted by cops, brass knuckles n knives will get u jail time, while things like keys, pennies, belts, etc wont, since u can easily have a legit excuse for carrying any of those at the given time of the altercation.

| Well, what most people don't know about behind all the travel guide tours and wide spread stereotype of kind and peaceful Hawaiian life, is basically Hawaii in general is one big ghetto.
About half who carry knives use them as tools for work or utility. Some are avid boar hunters (as in Hawaii it's almost always boar/feral pig season and knives are a popular weapon of choice), and the rest are ruffians.
It's not as bad as some other US cities, but Hawaii isn't all tours, pineapples, hula girls, and luaus, local bruddahs here are a rough lot. There's even a local term for 'em: Mokes; a big hawaiian guy who ain't gonna be nice to you for no reason if you look at him the wrong way. There's other meanings to it, but for an off islander, that's basically it.
