Visualize the chin as a rectangle. The temporal mandibular joints as two corners and two corners on either side of the point of the jaw as two corners. A strike must be aimed and directed into either point of the front of the jaw and directed toward the opposite side temporal mandibular joint. To find the TMJ you must first find the tragus. The tragus is the flap of cartilage just in front of the opening into the ear or the EAC (external auditory canal). Place your index finger one cm in front and one cm below the tragus, open and close your mouth until you have located the TMJ. Now, place your other index finger on the opposite side of the point of the jaw. Apply pressure in the direction of the opposite index finger or toward the opposite side TMJ with your mouth relaxed. If pressure is applied in the incorrect direction the mouth will open or close. You want to apply pressure so that the mouth or lower jaw stays stationary. This creates a solid transfer of energy into the TMJ. A straight forward punch dissipates the energy between both TMJs (less effective). This is grade one in study of the sweet science. Practice this in sparring, start logging those knockouts. Studying human anatomy will make you a more efficient fighter. Striking is the art of transferring energy from you to your opponent. Who ever transfers the most energy more efficiently wins. Also who ever has the most energy to transfer is a factor. The reason you need to be in shape. (more energy stored and quicker recovery). And of course the ability to absorb energy transfered. Training from a scientific point of view will make you more proficient in all aspects. I use the word scientific for lack of a better term. Intelligence will always prevail. I'm not saying a smart guy will always win over a lessor intelligent individual but the one who applies intelligent thought into his training will most likely come out on top more often than not. There is still nothing sweeter than a TKO to the body. My fav.
